La Sportiva Woman’s Gamma GTX Boot

December 2, 2011

The La Sportiva woman’s Gamma GTX is the ultimate trekking shoe.  Or wait, is it a boot? It’s both. It’s a hybrid between a

lightweight trail running shoe and a full-on trekking boot.  In a nut shell, the La Sportiva Gamma GTX is a do-it-all traveling and trekking boot.

It’s lightweight, sturdy, comfortable, with good support throughout the shoe.  They say for every 1 lb on your feet it feels like 5 lbs on your back.  The Gamma GTX weighs in at a mere 20.4 ounces making this one of the lightest trekking shoes or boots in the market.  Light trekking shoes reduce the toll on the entire body, helping the climber trek all day with a bounce in their step.

The Gamma GTX’s last is woman’s specific, providing a better fit to the female foot.  The ankle lacing system, like most La Sportiva shoes, helps lock the climber’s ankle into the heel cup preventing movement and blisters.  This shoe seems to fit well for both narrow and wide-ankle climbers.  The Gamma GTX is built with a Gore-tex lining, keeping the foot dry in wet, raining conditions.  Yet, this boot also breaths well due to mesh fabric on the upper portion of the boot.

The La Sportiva Gamma GTX held up to two weeks of trekking in northern Pakistan.  It was surprisingly comfortable day-after-day of long trekking.  The boot breathed very well, even on hot days.  With a savvy technical lacing system that prevented heel slip, no blisters developed on the reviewer’s feet, even wearing these shoes every day.  The ultimate test for these shoes came when the reviewer was stuck in a three-day typhoon in Oman.  These shoes stayed dry on the inside even with three days of torrential rain and flooding.

Favorite Features: Comfortable. Ankle lacing system that keeps the wearer’s heel locked in place. Good breathability. Solid foot support. Dry feet even in heavy rains. Lightweight.

Areas of Improvement: None noted by the reviewer.

Best Use: Approaches. Trekking. Hiking. Traveling.

Bottom Line: It’s the little things in life that matter. The La Sportiva Gamma GTX boots deliver on all of them – lightweight, comfortable to wear, dry feet, no blisters.  These shoes are worth the full price tag.
