Submission Guidelines
Alpine Athena is a core-focused woman’s climbing magazine, and as such, all submitted pieces must be focused on or related to women and climbing. We encourage article submissions and proposals. Please read the submission guidelines before submitting an article. The publication has a number of categories that articles may be submitted under, the requirements for each category is outlined in these Guidelines. List the article category in the title of your email.
FEATURES: Features are longer, indepth, descriptive articles that can cover a wide variety of topics, but all must be related to climbing or the climbing world or community. Topics can include stories of a climb or expedition, profiles of athletes and adventurers, a personal inner journey that’s related to climbing, a personal first, descriptive pieces on a certain region or climbing area, just to name a few.
Requirements:
- Please submit a 200-400 word proposal first. At the time of your proposal approval our Editor will let you know the article deadlines.
- Features are 1,000 – 3,000 words in length, including 3-4 photos, and an author bio.

GEAR REVIEWS: At Alpine Athena we aim to provide up-to-date reviews and information on the latest gear in the outdoor industry. Every gear review is done from a women’s perspective, addressing the question of how the gear meets women’s needs. Love a piece of gear? Think a piece of gear could use some improving? We’d love to hear about it and if it meets the Gear Review requirements we’ll publish the article in Alpine Athena.
Requirements:
- 500 – 1,000 words in length
- Please spell check.
- Include photos of the gear and photo credits.
- Disclaimer as to whether the gear was given by the company to test.
- Accompanied by a paragraph long author bio and a head shot of the author

HOW TO’s: At Alpine Athena, we value both the novice and the pro athlete; the enthused beginner and advanced climber. How To’s are a place for advanced climbers, professional athletes and guides to impart their knowledge and years of experience in the form of educational material and articles. Some How To’s are geared toward beginners. Some are aimed at climbers of all levels. And some are geared toward climbers looking to take their knowledge to the next level. But all are detailed, clear explanations on a very specific topic.
Requirements:
- 1,000-2,000 words in length
- Please spell check.
- Clear headings in the article, which make main points easy for the reader to follow
- Include 3-4 photos with your article and photo credits.
- Accompanied by a paragraph long author bio and a head shot of the author

BOOK REVIEWS: Interested in reviewing a book? Submit the review to submissions@alpineathena.com The book must be related to climbing, alpinism or the mountains/wilderness.
Requirements:
- 500 – 1,000 words in length
- Please spell check.
- Disclaimer as to whether the book was given by the author to be reviewed.
- Include a photo of the book and photo credit.
- Accompanied by a paragraph long author bio and a head shot of the author
INTERVIEWS: If you are interested in being interviewed or have a female alpinist or climber you are interested in interviewing, contact us at submissions@alpineathena.com
COLUMNS: There are opportunities for weekly and months columns. Submit column proposals to submissions@alpineathena.com
DISPATCHES: Planning an upcoming climb, an adventure related to climbing, interested in covering or reporting in from a climb? Email submissions@alpineathena.com
GIRL MOMENTS: Girl Moments are fun, humorous pieces that comment or touch on what it’s like being a female climber. Submit articles to submissions@alpineathena.com
EVENT REPORTS: Interested in having your event covered by Alpine Athena, your event announced in one of our Issues, or working together to produce a climbing related event in the Northwest. Contact events@alpineathena.com
RESOURCES: Our Resources section is designed to provide our readership with just that – resources. It will include information on good women-specific climbing courses and female guides, books, websites, videos and other resources all aimed to help provide women with resources to improve their climbing, gain answers to questions they have and access the large women’s climbing community. To submit a resource to be reviewed by our staff email submissions@alpineathena.com
VIDEO, PHOTOS AND CARTOONS: Not all content at Alpine Athena is limited to the written word. We welcome and encourage photographers, videographers and artists to submit photo and cartoons. Email those items to submissions@alpineathena.com
